Hay Fever

hay fever treatment girl surrounded by flowersHay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is a very common seen condition in the UK. What the conventional medicine offers for hay fever only alleviate the symptoms. More and more people are seeking natural remedy to manage this problem. Chinese Medicine views the cause of allergy as an imbalance of the immune system. Acupuncture and herbs, plus diet change can help restore the balance, regulate the immune system, therefore achieve a persistent effect without all the side effect from the long-term used drugs.

Asthma is a common condition and can happen at any age. The typical symptoms are wheeze, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways. It is not known why the inflammation occurs. Conventional treatment is usually with inhalers. It worsens during hay fever season and with infections.

Acupuncture can help patients with mild asthma completely come off their inhalers. Like hay fever, they only need to come for several sessions of acupuncture during hay fever season or it gets worse due to stress, infections. In severe cases, mostly elderly people, acupuncture can help to relieve the symptoms.

Also known as hives is red, raised, itchy rash appeared on the skin. Chronic urticaria may start when your body's immune system attacks its own tissues. This is known as an autoimmune reaction. Antibodies (proteins that usually fight bacteria and viruses) then trigger the release of histamine. Chronic urticaria often comes and goes. It can be triggered by stress, alcohol, caffeine, exposure to cold and heat, insect sting and bites, or can be unpredictable. Antihistamines sometimes don’t work. And we’d like to avoid taking corticosteroid tablets if possible, especially long term.

Case Histories

H, male, 13, Hay fever & Asthma

H had been asthmatic since he was a baby. He was on Becotide. He was brought to see me for his Hay fever when he was 13, by his mum who also sees me. A week later “Remarkable  improvement”- not only did his hay fever improved, he also reduced his Becotide by half! H seemed calmer and was sleeping better. What amazed me and his mum(and his family) was that H completely stopped taking his Becotide after the second session of acupuncture, no herbs. He still comes a few times every year during his school holidays to boost his immunity, his knee pain due to growing and rugby. His asthma is fine.

C, female, 57, Hay fever & Asthma

C had had hay fever for 50 years since she was a child. She lives in rural countryside of Shropshire. From April to August she couldn’t go out to enjoy the outdoors. Despite taking antihistamines she suffered badly from streaming nose, difficult to sleep. She had to take Seretide when the asthma was triggered. She had tried everything including homeopathy to no avail. She came to me because her daughter was seeing me for her hayfever. She hasn’t suffered since then (4 years ago) and each year she seems to be stronger and in a better health. Her anxiety has improved too. She still comes every year for some maintenance treatment.

S, female, 33, dentist. Hay fever/Allergic Rhinitis

S had had hay fever since 11 years old. It had got worse in the couple of years. She was suffering from itchy watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose and itchy throat constantly all  year around, even on antihistamines everyday. She was feeling tired. She had tried acupuncture and herbs before but it didn’t work. A friend recommended me. After two weeks treatment (acupuncture and herbal pills) and diet change she felt so much better. She continued having acupuncture once a month for a while and stopped antihistamine. She came back every year during the hayfever season for some top up treatments until I have moved away from Chester.

G, male, 47, gardener. Nasal polyps & Chronic sinusitis

G had suffered from nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis for years. He had three operations within four years to remove the polyps but it seemed they recurred more aggressively after each operation. He was fed up with a very blocked nose, post nasal drip, sinuses infections. He had to take antibiotics and steroid lots of the time.
His condition got much bettered controlled since he started acupuncture and Chinese herbs. The nasal polyps seemed to have reduced/less inflamed as his sinuses were much clearer, he didn’t need to take antibiotics much anymore.  He continued with maintenance treatment until I moved away form Chester.
